March 2016
We will be taking a peek at various media texts including commercials and newspaper advertisements. We will be learning to identify various elements of media texts (such as the purpose and target audiences). We will also be working on procedural writing. The students have already completed one procedural writing piece on their google drives—if you would like to take a look at what your child came up with please have them log on to their google drive accounts from home!
February 2016
In literacy, we are working on fairy tales with a twist. The students have transferred their knowledge surrounding the various elements of a text (setting, plot, characters) from last month and have created graphic organizers on their own fairy tales with a twist. From their graphic organizers, the students will create an interactive story on Google slides. Later this month we will take a peek at the various features of a text (title, subheadings, table of contents, and so on) and gain an understanding of how these features better help us understand the text.
January 2016
In literacy, we are focusing on our media habits. In particular, we will be looking at our TV habits and how much time we spend watching TV per week. Media is a large part of daily life that they are often taken for granted. Take this opportunity to look at how media positively and negatively affects your family life. Moreover, we will be identifying specific elements of texts and explaining how they contribute to the meaning of the texts. We will learn about the setting, the characters, plot and theme of a story.
December 2015
We have been busy adding details to our writing and learning how to self-edit our work. The students are practicing reading over their writing and making changes to their punctuation and spelling before handing it in to me.
The students finished their autobiographies and have moved onto writing a biography. The students independently selected who they wanted to write a biography on. Their choices were certainly fun and interesting! One student chose to write about a famous race car driver, another chose to write about a member from the band Kiss, while others chose a friend to write about in the classroom and collected information from them by using their interviewing skills. We will work on getting our good copies done of our biographies on the ipads.
We will also be working on and learning about perspective writing. The students will be asked to write pieces of work from the perspective of another person. I look forward to reading all of their wonderful ideas!
